Evergreen State College,
USA

Evergreen State College, founded in 1971, is a progressive, public liberal arts and sciences college located in Olympia, Washington.  Evergreen emphasizes collaborative, interdisciplinary learning across significant differences. The academic community engages students in defining and thinking critically about their learning. Evergreen supports and benefits from local and global commitments to social justice, diversity, environmental stewardship, and service in the public interest.

With Evergreen’s integrated approach to learning, students can combine several fields of study into a unique focus area or choose one of the Paths of Study, a sequence of programs in a particular broad subject area that has been planned out four years into the future. Evergreen’s educational program includes three Bachelor’s degrees, three graduate degrees (Master of Environmental Studies, Master of Public Administration, and Master in Teaching) and over 60 fields of studies. Students will usually take a full course load in a single 12 – 16-credit academic program that integrates different subjects. In this way, students will explore a central idea or theme that is interesting to them.

At Evergreen, context and explanations are used to evaluate performance, not a simple letter grade and students self-evaluate using a self-reflective academic statement. Evergreen is dedicated to sustainability. This value is reflected in the curriculum as well as in operations. Many programs and courses focus on the concept of sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective.
